Guest gooner52 Posted January 11, 2007 Report Posted January 11, 2007 what freeview digi box did you buy not all freeview box give you all the channels bought one a while back had loads not on there, then bought a better one, that had most of them what signal strenth are you getting, anything blocking its path,ie trees house`s etc...(anteena that is)i take it your using a outside antenna, not one sitting on top of your tv also booster might help you out a bit few ideas to get you cracking on  Quote
Andrew T Posted January 11, 2007 Author Report Posted January 11, 2007 Antenna is on a 3 Metre pole on the chimney but there is an 1800ft Hill between us and the transmitter. Given that we get a better signal on ITV analogue than BBC analogue I suspect that you're right about the 'box not picking up ITV and C4 (it's a Pace unit BTW). I assumed that all 'boxes gave all the freeview channels. Oh B*gger. Quote
seatkid Posted January 11, 2007 Report Posted January 11, 2007 The problem with Belmont is the frequency allocation of the the multiplexes is spread widely. To receive Freeview from the Belmont transmitter requires a high gain wideband aerial optimised for DTT reception. DTT is transmitted at low power from Belmont and the coverage area is limited as a result. Many old aerial installations which are in current service will be Group A aerials (installed pre Channel 5). Group A aerials will not be suitable for Belmont DTT or Analogue Channel 5 reception, so an aerial upgrade will be needed. Suitable high gain wideband aerials are available from Maplin Electronics - order code XQ42V.UHF Aerials are available in 4 Groups: Group A Covers Channels 21-34Group B Covers Channels 39-53Group C/D Covers Channels 48-68Group W Covers Channels 21-68 (wideband) Your existing (probably group A) aerial needs to be changed for a wideband (group W) aerial - many source online if you search. Smilge Posted January 11, 2007 Report Posted January 11, 2007 Might be worth checking to see what channel the television is tuned to the video recorder / Freeview box. If they're close to the ITV / Channel 4 channels, you could have co-channel interference. Quote
El Dingo Posted January 11, 2007 Report Posted January 11, 2007 I feel your pain... I am assured that all Freeview boxes will pick up ITV by the way. The signal strength of the channel 'packages' can be different from the same transmitter, I've been told, and so maybe the package containing ITV is just too weak for you to pick up. In my area, digital signals are weak (as they plan to 'up' the signal strength when they turn off analogue :16: ). So we needed a new aerial, a signal booster on the aerial and another signal booster to split off for the second telly (due to the long cable run to the second telly). We found that the analogue signal is better from Crystal Palace than Hannington, however, the digital signal is better from Hannington. So we swung our aerial around. Wierd but true. These folks are quite helpful...http://www.radioandtelly.co.uk/cgi-bin/for...ard=freeviewgen ...and where is Katman??? Quote

MadBaz Posted January 11, 2007 Report Posted January 11, 2007 I'm no expert but we've had similar probs with terresterial normal TV,(bloody big hill in way of Emley moor transmitter). We fixed it by subscribing to Cable, reasonably painless, except for install team tramping mud over new carpets, lifting the carpets to hide cable, sorted in the end though. Quote
morticiaskeeper Posted January 11, 2007 Report Posted January 11, 2007 We got on ok with our freeview box for a year, but then the signal started to go, about the same time as the vodaphone signal  Now we've gone for the basic sky package and hardly watch the terrestrial channels Quote

Guest gooner52 Posted January 12, 2007 Report Posted January 12, 2007 mb thats all a total joke mate i even went to a call out once in eltham south east london the lady that owned the house, had said the crew that came to install 2 telephone ext.had left loads of bits of plastic and raw plugs and screws on her floor and she had 2 young kids when i got there, she was dead right, plus as you said mud all over the mats, plus brick dust everywhere, i cleaned up all the bits, had said sorry for all the mess(but as she said it was the guys that done the work)just gives the rest of us that try to do a good job a bad name  i gave her a phone number at the time,in the end the cable company got carpet cleaners in to clean her carpets, which the crew had to pay for...... its the crews job to leave the subs house as tidy as they find it and not to ask the customer to carry boxes etc.. sorry to hear you had such a bad time with your install ps. should of made new hole in the wall for new modem cable, then used black and white caps @both ends, then used silicon to seal both entry and exit points of the cable, and the cable should not of been run under your mats, just sounds like a quik rubbish job ,likei have to attend most days all the best j Quote
MadBaz Posted January 12, 2007 Report Posted January 12, 2007 I was fuming, what made things worse was no-one at customer services was interested, no returned calls etc, I eventually phoned a mobile number that was on our welcome pack, it turned out to be an installations manager at the Kirklees depot, he sorted us out with carpets being cleaned and re-fitted, 6 months free service, as it turned out the sub-contractor had had loads of complaints and was subsequently fired. If I ever gave anyone that level of service I'd be out of business in a week. If I can bother you with a question Gooner, the cable that comes thru our garden, does it have to be at a certain depth and or in flexible duct/pipe? We're having a new fence put in, the cable is only a couple of inches down. Quote
jkspoff Posted January 12, 2007 Report Posted January 12, 2007 Get a satelite dish and a decoder, receive perfect picture and all freeview channels with a freeview card, no need for any more issues with aerials, you don't need to subscribe to Sky, just buy the bits off ebay for less than 50 quid and install yourself using the digibox built in meter and a bit of coax cable. It'll take an hour to do. Quote
seatkid Posted January 12, 2007 Report Posted January 12, 2007 WARNING! Low flying pigs at 12 o'clock! ;) Quote

We're having a new fence put in, the cable is only a couple of inches down. iirc its 12inches down, and both ends need to be visbleend going into t box, outside the front of your houseand the other end of the green flexi duck, should have a black cap on it,should be visble about 3 to 4 inches, they double cable rg11 iirc should then go in to your omny box in your wall m8your omny should also have a cable tie on it ,to keep it closed hope this helps Quote
MadBaz Posted January 12, 2007 Report Posted January 12, 2007 Thanks Gooner, there's no green duct, I'm gonna have to be careful not to cause problems when I rip out the hedges! Quote
Guest gooner52 Posted January 12, 2007 Report Posted January 12, 2007 have you just got the cable in the ground then  Quote
Guest Cepheus Posted January 12, 2007 Report Posted January 12, 2007 Baz, If you "accidentally" go through the siamese cable under your garden, phone up faults and claim to be ill or disabled and ask for special needs forms to be sent out. You will then be granted one grace special needs visit and an engineer will attend within 4 hours and rectify the issue! Seems like everyone does this these days, the amount I have to deal with out of hours!!!! Quote
